Vacuum Casting and Silicone Molding
Vacuum casting, RTV molding, Silicone molding, Urethane molding – these refer to the same process; two compounds react inside a mold to form the solid part. No high temperatures or pressures are involved, making it very different to injection molding or rapid tooling. It provides an economical way to create batch prototypes for exhibitions and marketing research.
Material properties mimic those of injection molded parts, and highly detailed surface texture is transferred from the master pattern. High quality silicone is used for the mold material, while the master is made by SLA or CNC. A pre-existing component may also be used as the master, in cases where extra prototypes are required. Hence, vacuum casting offers an economic solution in cases where duplication of existing objects is required.
In addition to plastic parts, vacuum casting can be used to make rubber parts (from Shore A 35 to Shore A 90.) 3ERP also offerss prototyping of silicone components, through the use of ABS or Aluminium molds.
